Project Description

Various kinds of flood i.e. river flood, flash flood, urban flood, landslide Dam Outburst flood, Glacial Lake outburst flood in which flash flood is most dangerous creating human and property loss in Nepal. Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) is becoming one of the most effective instruments to reduce the lives and property. In Nepal DHM and some non-government organization had done remarkable work on the FEWS. YAE in the joint venture with MRDF had conducted the study Reliability and Effectiveness of Flood Early Warning System in Nepal: Lessons Learnt and Way Forward in Nepal as a consulting service to Practical Action South Asia.

The study was focused to analyze and document the evolution of EWS from technological as well as social/institutional perspective in different river systems of Nepal together with the contribution made by different agencies and document and compare the flood damage profile of major river systems (Karnali, Babai, West Rapti, Narayani, Koshi, and Kankai) before and after the establishment of EWS.  And assessed the factors playing roles in the sustainability of flood EWS and its accessibility at the community and sub-national levels also recommended the appropriate policy needs for substantially enhancing flood EWS and increase its availability to the people to meet the targets of Sendai Framework for DRR at the national level by 2030.

From this study, it was found that flood early warning system in Nepal has significantly improved in recent years and becoming a more effective tool to reduce the risk from the flood. However, some technical, policy and institutional development have to be done with respect to time.
